The Witty family is now settled in Greeley, Colorado! For those of you who don’t know, we were on Bainbridge Island, Washington last year house sitting for Laura’s Uncle and Auntie. During the year the Lord provided temporary work for John but he was also on the job search for a permanent position. In God’s perfect timing, 2 weeks before we were scheduled to finish house sitting John got the position of Servant Leadership Director and High School Bible teacher at Dayspring Christian Academy in Greeley, Colorado. We enjoyed some summer fun with family in both Oregon and California and then off we left for Colorado!
John has been teaching now for a couple of months at DCA and it couldn’t be a better fit! The school has welcomed us in such an incredible way; it’s a blessing to be part of the Dayspring family. During the interview process the director of the school said to us, “I realize your heart is missions and we are SO excited about that… we want you to know that we expect during holiday breaks and summers you’ll be off on the mission field!” WOW! To join a school that understands John’s passion for teaching the Word to high school students paired with our love for missions is a blessing beyond words.
That brings us to our next plan for missions! Last year we had the opportunity to join Care Corps International in Gulu, Uganda to help with a therapeutic program for children and youth affected by the unimaginable violence in the region. While Care Corps ran a Trauma Care Program for over 250 children John and I had the special opportunity to work with 15 “child mothers” – teenage girls who are mothers of children from newborns to six year olds. Many of these young girls have had children as a result of rape or other unfortunate circumstances. It was a joy to get to know these young girls and their sweet babies! We helped them begin to address their trauma and tell their stories through the art of photography. None of them had ever even held a camera before but by the end of the program the results were astounding. As we left it was difficult knowing that email or even snail mail isn’t an option for them as they live in villages out in the bush. Our only way of seeing them again was to return this year!
A team of trained trauma professionals, a doctor, a professional photographer and a videographer are all set and ready to return to Gulu over Thanksgiving, November 22 – December 3! Some of the team members including John’s dad, Dr. James Witty, have been working in Gulu since the late 90’s – working with former child soldiers. The 2013 Trauma Care Program will run for over 200 children and John and I will run the photography portion again with the young mothers. Some of the older teenage children may also join in! This year we hope to expand it and the last day of the program we hope to have a small photography exhibition. A special part of the week for me (Laura) will include taking a portrait of every child in the camp and having them printed to give to the children. Little did we know when we did this last year that this was the first picture these children ever had of themselves! To see their image, hear that they are special and come to understand that their story (even if it has included trauma) is valuable is a first step toward experiencing the healing and restoration that God desires for all of us. The good news is that God has a good plan to continue their story.
This is the part where we need to include you.
